Black & White T-Shirts Appointed As Approved Reseller Of Vic Bay Brand

Black & White T-Shirts has announced that it will be supplying Vic Bay products, at cost price, with printing to be done in-house.

Vic Bay managing director Mike Shiller said, ‘We are a wholesaler of garments, primarily made in southern Africa, to local resellers, and Black & White have chosen to partner with us as their primary supplier of apparel, which they will print onto and sell to their customers.

‘This partnership of us as a wholesaler of blank apparel with a leading printer here in Gauteng – Black & White – will show the power of a consistent supply with consistent quality and fast turnaround times on printed apparel into the local markets. This also highlights that locally produced and printed products are as competitive on price and delivery as any foreign garment.’

Black & White director Cal Dawkins said, ‘We have for more than 20 years strived to be Johannesburg’s premier independent T-shirt printing company. However, over the years we have found that imported garments prove to be challenging due to the inconsistency of supply and quality of the garments, most particularly with regards to tone and sizing inconsistencies.

‘So it naturally made sense for us to partner with a top quality local manufacturer that could mitigate our current supply issues. Hence we are delighted to have become an approved reseller of the Vic Bay brand and hope our already strong relationship goes from strength to strength for the both of us.’

Egg Films Takes MTN And Castle Lite From Icy Snow To Sunny Beaches For New Campaigns

Filming for Castle Lite and MTN, with guest appearances by Inuit people and local hip hop icon Riky Rick, Egg Films director, Adrian de Sa Garces, and his team, went to extremes for MTN and Castle Lite to create fun and irreverent TVCs in which everything is not quite as it seems.

The spot for Castle Lite, in which de Sa Garces and the team collaborated with Ogilvy Cape Town, is based on the ‘loop’ idea – a circular narrative arc in which the audience travels through improbable scenarios and land up full circle. In this case, the ad started in a luxury penthouse in the Cape Town CBD, travelled to an icy Inuit village, and finished where it started. The ‘loop’ is facilitated by a nifty dance move that adds to the comical aspect, especially alongside the Sugar Hill Gang’s Rapper’s Delight as the soundtrack.

While many associate South America with sun and siesta as opposed to snow, it is one of the only places worldwide where you can find snow in September. De Sa Garces and his team found themselves at the terminus of the Andes, quite literally at the end of the world, to film the snowy Inuit village scenes.

Heading straight from icy snow to sunny beaches, de Sa Garces and Producer Lisa Gardner were then off to Gordon’s Bay in Cape Town to film TBWA’s MTN Summer spot. Conceptualised by Nikki Garrett and Jeffrey Tyser under ECD Keith Manning, this tongue-in-cheek execution follows the ’Boss Zonke’, hip hop icon Ricky Rick himself, as he struts his stuff on the bustling beachfront. Confidently making his way to the beach, he receives admiring looks, smiles and recognition, or so he thinks.

Viewers soon find out that he is just a regular guy, dad bod and all, and the looks he has been receiving are probably more in confusion and mirth than admiration. But that’s OK, because he is Boss Zonke in his own mind due to that ‘winning feeling’ MTN gives him. The spot is fun, light-hearted and a great introduction to the glorious summer days ahead.

FCB Joburg Announces Diversified Creative Leadership Structure

FCB's newly appointed creative leadership team.

The agency has promoted five of its finest creative talents. Mbeu ‘Snooze’ Kambua, Khanyi Mpumlwana, Nhlanhla Ngcobo, Nobantu Sibeko and Jonathan Wolberg have all been promoted to Creative Directors.

Suhana Gordhan and Tian van den Heever, both of whom are no strangers to the advertising industry, have been promoted to Executive Creative Directors, joining Neo Segola, who became an ECD last year. The trio have consistently been creating highly contagious, well-awarded work for the agency for several years now.

According to FCB Joburg Chief Creative Officer, Ahmed Tilly, the agency has been known, for generations, as one that develops and empowers young talent in the industry, many of whom have gone on to become leaders in the larger advertising and communications industry. ‘The decision to invest in the future of the industry by placing the responsibility of creative leadership with a new cohort of young diverse talent is an indication of how serious FCB Joburg is about true diversity and inclusion; and in the future of South Africa.’

‘These individuals have not just delivered excellent creative work but they have already been performing as leaders in the creative department. Promoting them to Creative Directors was the natural next step. We’re exceptionally proud to see them step up. It is this calibre of young and gifted leadership that will take the agency to new creative heights – in South Africa and the global stage.’

Media And Communication Experts Need To Set The Narrative For What Works In SA

Chris Botha, Group Managing Director of Park Advertising.

Chris Botha, Group Managing Director of Park Advertising, says it’s the time of year where everyone can tell you how many weeks, days, minutes and seconds there are left until they go on holiday. It is human nature to ‘look forward’ to a better tomorrow. There is something quite natural about it. Our beloved country has been on a sentimental rollercoaster of note this year.

We started with the same line we start with every year – ‘2019 can’t possibly be worse than 2018’… Sound familiar? The eternal optimism exists that this year has to be better than last year. Add some Thuma Mina ‘gees’, the upcoming elections, and hope sprang up again. But post-elections, all it took was a few hours of load shedding and some bad news on the corruption front and we were back in the doldrums again.

But then thank God for the Springboks. Just when the emigration office was being overrun – 80 minutes of magical rugby united us as a nation and made us all believe that We Can Do This! Nothing really changed in the country. But the sentiment did. A recent HSRC study looking at the effect of the Rugby World Cup win, found that 88% of respondents said that sport adds to their sense of belonging to South Africa while 85% thought that sport can help South Africa to deal with xenophobia and racism.

There is definitely something to be said for that positive momentum. That sentiment. That hope. It does actually change behaviour. It makes you want to be a better person. It makes you want to work harder. It makes you want to succeed. So this is my Christmas wish. That we as a nation start looking at the positive in our country. That we rabidly hold onto the things that work, and ferociously fight off what doesn’t.

As media and communication experts, it is our job to set the narrative for what works in our country. Why was Mbuyiseni Ndlovu (the Grinch who stole the world cup joy) given the airtime that he got? The ‘Siya sentiment’ is far more powerful, and will drive this country forward. We need to blindly ‘fake it till we make it’. It’s been proven by many experts that once you believe you can turn the ship around, actually doing it becomes so much easier. South Africans need to believe in the promise of the rainbow nation, and we as media and marketing experts need to lead the charge.

I am not saying we should be ostriches and dig our heads in the soil when it comes to our challenges, but there is something to be said for reporting our successes as well. Just recently Mpumelelo Mhlongo – a South African Paralympic athlete – broke his own world record at the 2019 World Para Athletics Games, that’s great news! In the past year, we have had new leadership instilled at SARS, the NPA and the Hawks. Our country is turning the corner, and we need to lead the charge in the sentiment states.

So here is my request to our media owner partners, clients and staff. Let’s use positive words when referring to our industry, our country, and our people. Yes, business is tough, but we are employed, we are working hard, and we are making money (well, most of us…). When someone asks you ‘How is business’ – instead of replying with a short four letter word – let’s start speaking positively. ’It’s tough, but we are working to change it. We believe we can grow from here.’

A quick glance at the financial statements of every major business shows that there is cash available for investment. I think that this cash will get freed up when consumer sentiment improves. We have the resources and the strength to turn this boat around. Now all we need is the belief.

So am I looking forward to the festive season break? Hell yes. But am I also really excited to get my teeth into 2020 and to make it the best year ever? Hell yes even more! I’m looking forward to playing my tiny part in turning our country’s future around. Bring on ‘back to school’ and ‘back to work’. I can’t wait.

AdFocus Honours M&C Saatchi Abel With Advertising Agency Of The Year Award

M&C Saatchi Abel team at the AdFocus Awards.

M&C Saatchi Abel walked away with three accolades at the 2019 Financial Mail AdFocus Awards: including Large Agency of the Year, Partnership of the Year for its work with Nando’s and Industry Leader for its chief creative officer Neo Mashigo.

The awards top off a phenomenal period of growth and success for M&C Saatchi Abel, which is about to celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2020. Entering this landmark year on the back of this recognition is a doff of the hat to the vision of the agency’s founders, partners and staff across the Johannesburg and Cape Town agencies.

The AdFocus awards have evolved into a leading platform for agencies and individuals in the marketing and communications landscape to be recognised in their respective fields, not only for their creative skills, but also their business acumen.

M&C Saatchi Abel co-founder and chief executive Mike Abel said the agency is ecstatic and that the awards top off a period of immense growth underpinned by the agency’s core philosophy of Brutal Simplicity of Thought.

‘Our unrelenting orientation as an agency has always been to add real, measurable value to our clients’ businesses, from their top line, to market share and brand equity. I am very proud that under a very capable team of leaders we have taken these awards ahead of our 10th birthday in a few months,’ said Abel.

‘Mashigo’s Industry Leader award is validation of the immense impact he has had on M&C Saatchi Abel, its clients and the industry as a whole. We are overjoyed that the significant contribution Mashigo has made to our agency, advertising and creativity in this country as a whole has been recognised. He is a dear friend, valued business partner, and creative force in our country,’ said Abel.

Having received his award, Mashigo said, ‘I fervently believe creative solutions not only benefit the businesses of our clients, but form the backbone of all interventions aimed at making South Africa a better, more inclusive and competitive country,’ said Mashigo.

Abel added that the agency’s partnership with Nando’s resonates with South Africans because the relationship is built on authenticity and trust, which allows creativity to flourish and innovative and compelling solutions to emerge. The latest fruits of this relationship are evident in the recently released Nando’s Mzansipoli advert, which has captured the hearts and laughs of the public.

‘The Nando’s partnership has struck a chord with the public. The key ingredients being innate trust, brutal simplicity of thought, brave risk taking socially and politically and mixing it with a whole lot of fun. Then providing the space for the best people to produce the best results,’ he concluded.

Nike Spotlights Caster Semenya’s Rise In Birthplace Of Dreams Campaign

‘The birthplace of dreams’ charts Semenya’s journey from her hometown in Limpopo to professional athlete to running coach. For over a decade, Semenya has broken records, set records, and in doing so, inspired the next generation of athletes to play more sports and achieve their goals. But rarely has she told her story, in her words.

Nike’s ‘The birthplace of dreams’ campaign is narrated by Semenya herself, and gives the audience an authentic look into her world – where her dream began and that which set the stage for her athletic journey.

The Birthplace of Dreams was conceptualised by Futura’s Executive Creative Director Gustav Greffrath and Account Director Bianca Vermaak together with Arcade Content’s Director Lebogang Rasethaba and Producer Julia Schnurr.

Semenya’s story starts in her hometown of Ga-Masehlong, a small village outside of Polokwane, in South Africa. Before she dreamed of being an 800m athlete, Semenya played football. ‘I played under 14. Most people came to see me play, and how I played, because they know I’m a girl. I was fast and I played a fast game.’

Semenya realised her talent from an early age, and this talent was nurtured by her family, whom she attributes most of her success to. ‘Positivity comes from where you’re coming from. How you’re raised, the love that you get from your family and their belief in you. If people believe in you, you’ll always be positive, you’ll be a believer,’ she said.

Her solid support structure and natural talent propelled the athlete into her track and field career where she has inspired the world. The support that she received is the driving force behind Semenya and she’s paying it forward by inspiring the next generation of athletes.

In 2018, Semenya together with her wife, Violet, and close friend, Koketso Mogapi, started her own development club, the Masai Athletics Club. The club operates in Pretoria and Soweto and aims to find young athletes on a grassroots level and developing that talent to become the next running stars. To date, the club has over 60 young aspiring athletes competing in some of South Africa’s top running competitions.

Through the film, we get to see Semenya’s passion to instil a sense of belonging, family and inspiration for the next generation of athletes. Said Semenya, ‘We want to build a human before we can build an athlete, before we can build a leader.’

Loeries Releases 2019 Official Rankings

Since 2010, the Loeries Official Rankings have offered a comprehensive overview of the annual performance across the brand communications industry throughout Africa and the Middle East. The rankings list the top brands and agencies, as well as specialist focus areas and individual performance in key areas.

The Loeries Official Rankings is a useful and independent measure of who’s doing what and who’s doing it the best in the industry, across Africa and the Middle East. The Loeries have made some changes to a few of last year’s categories.

The Music and Sound Composition was divided into three categories (for the individual rankings); Sound Designer, Music Composer and Music Supervisor. The rest were category name changes. For the company rankings; Communication Design changed to Design and Digital Interactive Communication changed to Digital, and for the individual rankings, Film Director changed to Director.

The Process

While there can be many ways of analysing any competition, the Loeries have provided a thorough and fair process to accurately report on the results of the awards. The exact methodology that is used for the ranking is described here, and publication of the chosen procedures in advance of our entry deadline and judging ensures no bias in favour of any particular outcome. To see how the rankings are calculated, click here.

2019 sees Joe Public United being ranked the number one agency in the Overall Ranking by Agency – Africa and the Middle East – for the second year in a row. Xolisa Dyeshana, chief creative officer, was elated because he recognises the Loeries as the premier awards in the Africa Middle East region and as one of the top awards in the world.

‘To be recognised at this level is a huge honour for Joe Public,’ said Dyeshana. ‘We are proud to be creating work that not only resonates within the regions but is of particularly high quality for our clients. We strive every day to improve our product and add continued value to our clients’ businesses. So to receive this accolade is a testament to the opportunity given to us by the brands we work on and the hard work of the people in our company.’

TBWA\ retained its place as top-ranked Overall Regional Agency Group, while TBWA\Istanbul shot up two places, coming first in the Ranking by Agency – Region Excluding South Africa category. Chief creative officer Ilkay Gurpinar explained, ‘Coming from Turkey and being awarded by a totally different collective of respectable jury members with the highest award in this category shows us once again that the language of creativity is universal. It is like we are speaking to each other through creativity, which is very exciting and fun.’ She further commented on the incredible authenticity and creative DNA that is prevalent across the region.

Pete Khoury, chief creative officer at TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris Johannesburg, said being ranked Regional Agency Group for the second year in a row is ‘an amazing feat and acknowledgement of our collective capabilities across our region: creating iconic, compelling and relevant work for our clients across the region and on multiple platforms that leverage every media channel.’

Cem Topcuoglu, regional CEO of TBWA, added, ‘It’s great to see our regional network building on its strong foundations. Next year, we’re going for the hat trick.’

The top-ranked brand for 2019 was Chicken Licken (up from number 2 in 2018). Newcomers City Lodge Hotel Group and Philips as well as the Nelson Mandela Foundation took second and third place respectively. Chantal Sombonos-Van Tonder, MD of Chicken Licken, says she is proud to continue her father’s legacy in ‘taking this company to the heights it deserves.’

In the Small Agency category (1-24 employees), Regency Global took first place, while Duke moved up one slot from last year to take second place, and Sunshine Collective took the third spot. ‘We are super-excited to receive this recognition,’ said Shani Kay, Regency Global chief creative, ‘and equally so to see our approach to authentic brand building and profit-with-purpose storytelling starting to make some industry waves. We believe in helping conscious brands to build long-lasting and sincere stakeholder relationships, and 2019 has helped us prove the concept of just that. Moreover, it has reaffirmed our conviction in the power of real human narratives to positively impact society, so particularly necessary and relevant in South Africa today.’

For the first time, in addition to brand communication, Loeries Design entries included areas of design such as retail furniture and product design, fabric, wallpaper, lighting, architecture and interior design, and even the design of signage programmes.

This recently extended Design category paid off for furniture designers David Krynauw and Jasmyn Pretorius, who were jointly ranked number two in the individual rankings – Designer category.

Turkish communication designer Önder Sakıp Dündar was ranked the top designer. ‘The bonds between design and advertising are getting stronger day by day,’ he reflected. ‘It’s because agencies and brands have realised the importance of design – giving them a face, boosting visibility, driving conversations and reinforcing messaging.’

Ranking information and methodology was last updated on 26 November 2019. Click here to see the full ratings list.

#SAINC Launches Season Two Of The Television And Digital Campaign

Regency Global producers of #SAINC were awarded a Loerie for best 2019 small agency in Africa and the Middle East.

Once again, the power of sharing positive stories is at the heart of the new series, which aims to change the national conversation by highlighting and celebrating brands that are doing their part to create shared value for all South Africans.

Having scooped a Gold Loerie and ranked three times, including best 2019 small agency in Africa and the Middle East, Regency Global have launched the second exciting season of their award-winning television and digital campaign #SAINC, which airs from this week on local channels, running until mid-2020.

Airing on e.tv News and Sport, SABC 2, Business Day TV and 20 local community channels, the campaign is the brainchild of South African filmmaker Shani Kay, who has had significant success showcasing the concept of profit-with-purpose. Having recently landed two Loerie rankings in her personal capacity, Kay is a passionate storyteller and resolute advocate of authentic brand building in concurrently driving business growth and social progress.

According to Kay, when brands start to look for their best stories, they unlock an understanding of the true value they can – and are – creating; enabling the virtuous circle of momentum to start driving our inclusive progress.

‘As people, we connect with people. When we meet human beings and learn about the challenges they have overcome and the successes they have achieved, we start to care about these people. And so, when we learn about the brands that have helped them along the way, we start to care about them too. Authentic experiences translating into real and trusted stakeholder relationships. What could be better?’ commented Kay.

#SAINC’s confirmed line-up for season 2 includes: Mercedes-Benz, TFG, Shell, Fedgroup, Citadel, Volvo, Anglo American, DBSA, Kansai Plascon, ABB, Total, Oceana, SAB Foundation, Motus, Avbob, Tiger Brands, Bayport, Hisense and Mondelez.
