Primedia Outdoor Joins Out Of Home Media Owners In #OurSecondChance Campaign

Primedia Outdoor is currently screening the global #OurSecondChance campaign across their roadside digital networks in South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Nigeria, Swaziland, Zambia as well as Zimbabwe and will run the campaign for the duration of August 2020.

Primedia Outdoor joined many other Out of Home media owners from across the world in support of the new global digital Out of Home (DOOH) campaign from The World Out of Home Organisation (WOO). The global #OurSecondChance campaign is believed to be the world’s biggest digital Out of Home (DOOH) campaign to date. It was launched on 27 July in markets like Europe, North and South America, Africa, Asia, China and Australia.

‘Our Second Chance reflects the new post Covid world, in a non-partisan way, and highlights the opportunity it gives citizens across the world to consider their priorities and aspirations,’ said Tom Goddard, president at WOO. ‘New Commercial Arts has produced a stunning campaign that shows the Out of Home industry at its best and most striking: a reminder to advertisers and agencies that as the world re-opens for business, Out of Home remains the only true global broadcast medium,’ he added.

The campaign is the first major campaign from New Commercial Arts, the agency formed in May by Adam&Eve founders James Murphy and David Golding with Ian Heartfield from BBH and Rob Curran from Wunderman Thompson. Grand Visual is handling campaign production and distribution.

‘This was a big brief from a major international organisation and a terrific opportunity for the agency to demonstrate its capabilities in a medium we love on a global stage at a pivotal point in time,’ said Ian Heartfield, Chief Creative Officer at New Commercial Arts.

‘The quality and ubiquity of screens around the word make DOOH the perfect medium to address global audiences at scale, centralised localisation and revisioning delivers control and maximises creative impact across the diverse DOOH landscape,’ said Neil Morris, CEO at Grand Visual.

Jorja Wilkins, Marketing and Marketing Services Executive at Primedia Outdoor said, ‘We are absolutely delighted to be a part of this global initiative that really showcase the power of OOH as a global broadcast medium.’

Alongside the massive DOOH campaign will be a major social initiative with the hashtag #OurSecondChance deploying Twitter polls to explore consumer attitudes to the choices and opportunities presented in a world changed by Covid-19.

Authenticity, Vulnerability And Diversity In Marketing

Lauren Vickery, Marketing Director, Sage Africa and Middle East.

It is a really hard time. There is a sense of perpetual anxiety – for the people we love, our businesses, and for the people around us. It has become part of our daily lives, for who knows how long, and the unknown is a difficult place to navigate. Lauren Vickery, Marketing Director, Sage Africa & Middle East, discusses leading teams in times of uncertainty.

For me, big learning has been running a remote team. It is a completely different skill that I and many other leaders had not really considered until now. But it was also an opportunity to define the foundation for this new way of working. We had to build a different kind of camaraderie for a team that didn’t see one another face to face. So, we built that foundation on communication and openness, and it has been wonderful.

Everyone is more open to talking about how they’re feeling and about the impact Covid-19 has had on their families. Never before have we known so much about each other – we are literally inside each other’s homes. This has filtered into our work ethic because we have had to find a new balance and we have had to really understand people’s circumstances. We are all vulnerable but we are all being our authentic selves – with our partners, children, and dogs in the background – and that is brilliant.

Authenticity in the workplace

It is critical. I don’t think there is anything more important in business than being yourself and it is something I’m really passionate about – not only in staying true to my own values, but also in seeing authenticity in others and drawing it out of them.

There is a degree of vulnerability that comes with being your authentic self, especially in the workplace, and I think that’s why people are hesitant – for fear of being judged or rejected. That is why we must create an environment where people feel safe being themselves.

Vulnerability

Vulnerability is about accepting that you will not always get it right, that you don’t know everything, and that you do not have to keep up a façade of strength and act like you have it all together.

Being a gay woman in business, there probably have been barriers, but I have never sought out barriers. I am often the only woman at the boardroom table, but I do not notice it, because I’m not looking for it. Rather, I’m looking for opportunities to drive success and change within our business and team. Exploring opportunities often puts us into unknown waters and uncomfortable situations, but that’s the exciting part as I know that is where I’ll grow. I seek out opportunities to be vulnerable.

Authenticity in uncomfortable situations

Be comfortable in your own skin and be proud of your value system. Yes, I am gay and an advocate for speaking about it and being proud of it. As leaders, we need to break down stereotypes and embrace people’s (including your own) uniqueness by focusing on the perspective and value they add.

Using technology

Everything we do as marketers is fuelled by technology, and when you are a data-driven, performance-focused business, you need a tool stack that can manage your data and bring it to life. Tech, data and algorithms help us understand customer behaviour in a way that we have never been able to before. This makes us better marketers because we can pivot around our customers’ needs and market to them in different and personalised ways.

We hire for authenticity and cultural fit, and we introduce employees to things like customer intent, marketing automation, and data and performance analysis. We are creating a new generation of marketers who have the freedom to experiment and learn and to come along for the journey.

Advice for the next generation of leaders

The best thing you can do as a leader is to seek out diversity – in thought, experience and background – and to create an environment of inclusiveness where everyone can flourish. Diversity has real power because that is where you start breaking down barriers to start operating in a different way.

Young women entering the workplace

Don’t put too much emphasis on what other people think. If you focus on the fact that you are the only woman in the room, or the youngest person in the room, or the least experienced, you might miss the opportunities that present themselves.

I am inspired by anyone who has a different view, is willing to try something new, or to take a risk. It encourages you to think about something different and has a knock-on effect of others wanting to try new things.

Focus on being the best version of yourself and stay true to your values. Put yourself out there, experiment, try new things, put your hand up, and make yourself vulnerable. Progress is better than perfection.

Mall Ads Re-Launches Mass Market Audience Mall TV

The re-launch of Mall TV leverages the opportunity presented by the growth, globally of digital place-based networks. In strengthening the Mall TV offering, Mall Ads believes it now has a solution that speaks more effectively to clients and brands seeking alternative and engaging ways to converse with consumers, particularly in the attractive mall environment.

The Mall Ads view is that the mass market remains untapped and represents an opportunity for it to reinforce its position as a market leader by becoming one of the first industry players to build a TV network in the mass market sector.

Mzi Deliwe, Deputy CEO of Provantage Media Group and Director of Mall Ads said, ‘The content has to supplement the mall experience, so the focus is very much on broadcasting relevant, high-interest content that adds significant value to shoppers and their shopping experience.’

In addition to brand adverts and content, stores situated within the mall can take advantage of on-screen directional messaging to drive shoppers directly to the physical store location. 30-second adverts are available for interested clients and brands at frequencies of two or four times an hour. In addition, a ‘wrapped advertising package’ offers strategic brand messaging placement alongside the network’s sports and news content.

According to recent PQ Media studies, all Digital OOH (DOOH) media silos are on a steady growth trajectory year-on-year, with digital place-based networks at the forefront of that growth, whilst also being the digital OOH medium leader. ‘Digital media growth is outpacing conventional media platforms and the proliferation of DOOH is making it easier to present dynamic campaigns to consumers,’ said Deliwe.

HaveYouHeard Creates Series That Taps Into South Africa’s Rich Music Culture

HaveYouHeard created an edutainment series that brings together Old Mutual AMPD Studios, and ViacomCBS Networks Africa channels, MTV Base and BET Africa, to educate Africa’s youth on the skills they’ll need to hone if they want to become successful performance and recording artists.

The innovative show, called AMPD Studios Live, draws back the curtain on the music industry as more than 20 South African music heavyweights share their trials, tribulations, lessons and soundtracks to their stories.

‘Music has the power to not only change a mood but a person’s perspective and even their environment. The presence or the lack of money tends to do the same thing,’ said Thobile Tshabalala, Head of Brand at Old Mutual. ‘This show provides us with another innovative way to champion mutually positive futures for the youth of our continent.’

Old Mutual AMPD Studios was launched by Old Mutual in a bid to connect with new and emerging target markets for its products and services, particularly what it terms the ‘new age market’.

The strategy to reach this market was guided by HaveYouHeard, which suggested Old Mutual tap into South Africa’s rich music culture and use music as the driver. Old Mutual AMPD Studios features a meeting room, coffee shop, co-working space and free wifi downstairs and two ultra-modern recording studios, the latter accessible when the aspiring musician opens an Old Mutual Money Account.

‘The move to the small screen is a natural progression of the programme,’ said HaveYouHeard’s Content Director, Jon Savage. ‘Honest and raw conversations with the giants of the industry will help guide aspiring musicians so that they make the right decisions about their careers and financial security.’

AMPD Studios Live is broadcast on MTV Base DSTV Channel 322 at 21:30 and BET DSTV Channel 129 at 18:30. The show runs for 10 weeks. Some of the topics that the artists will tackle include ‘The secrets of building a business in music’ and ‘The building blocks behind SA’s biggest careers’ as well as those relating to publishing, contracts and tax.
