Cadbury’s Campaign Sheds Light On The Deep Cultural Significance Of South African Names

Cadburys Campaign Sheds Light On The Deep Cultural Significance Of South African Names
Dr. Yanga LP Majola.

In celebration of South Africa’s rich linguistic diversity, Cadbury’s ‘Real Mzansi Names’ campaign has launched a groundbreaking initiative, shedding light on the deep cultural significance of South African names. Dr. Yanga LP Majola, Sociolinguist and Academic Manager at the Tshwane University of Technology, offers profound insights into the importance of embracing and understanding our names as markers of heritage, identity and connection.

‘If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart,’ Nelson Mandela once said.

These words resonate deeply in South Africa, a nation where the colours of our 12 official languages paint a vibrant tapestry of cultures and histories. But what happens when we stumble over the very words meant to connect us – our names? Beyond simple identifiers, names in South Africa are woven with cultural weight and significance. They are echoes of our heritage, whispers of ancestral stories, and pronouncements of hopes for the future. As I’ve learned throughout my life and career studying African languages and linguistics that a name is never just a name.

Each Name Has A Legacy

Consider the expectant parents, on the brink of welcoming new life. Their choice of name often reflects the circumstances surrounding the birth, weaving in societal realities, familial aspirations, and even personal struggles. A name like ‘Vusumuzi’ (meaning ‘builder of the home’) might speak to a family’s yearning for stability, while ‘Tshimangadzo’ (meaning ‘miracle’) could signify a beacon of light in challenging times. Each name carries a story, a legacy passed down through generations. In recent years, we’ve witnessed a heartening resurgence of indigenous names. This movement signifies a powerful reconnection with heritage, a reclaiming of identities shaped by colonialism and cultural assimilation.

Rewriting The Narrative

For generations, many South Africans were pressured to adopt English or ‘Christian’ names, which were given without meaning, often relegating their birth names to the shadows. This practice, however well-intentioned, created a disconnect from ancestral roots and a sense of cultural ambiguity. Today, young South Africans are rewriting this narrative. They are choosing names that celebrate their heritage, breathing life back into languages and traditions that were nearly silenced. This shift is not about rejecting other influences, but rather about embracing the richness of our diverse cultural tapestry. It’s about recognising that true unity thrives on acknowledging and respecting our differences. However, this linguistic diversity, while a source of national pride, can also create barriers.

Many South Africans struggle to pronounce names from cultures different from their own, leading to awkward encounters and missed connections. This difficulty can lead to feelings of being overlooked, devalued, and even isolated. Imagine the emotional impact of having your name, a fundamental part of your identity, consistently mispronounced. It can feel like a dismissal of your heritage, a disregard for your individuality. Conversely, the simple act of taking the time to learn and pronounce someone’s name correctly speaks volumes. It’s a gesture of respect, a bridge across cultural divides, and a testament to the power of human connection.

Embracing Diversity

Cadbury’s ‘Real Mzansi Names’ campaign beautifully embodies this spirit of generosity and connection. By highlighting the stories behind South African names and providing guidance on pronunciation, the campaign encourages us to embrace our linguistic diversity as a source of unity, not division. It reminds us that knowing someone’s name is just the first step; pronouncing it correctly is a powerful act of recognition and respect.

This initiative offers a wonderful starting point for anyone eager to learn more about the beautiful tapestry of South African names. By engaging with the campaign, listening to the stories, and practising the pronunciations, we can all contribute to a more inclusive and understanding society. Beyond Cadbury’s efforts, I encourage everyone to approach the learning of names with genuine curiosity and respect.

Ask your colleagues, friends, and neighbours about the stories behind their names. Embrace the opportunity to expand your linguistic horizons and connect with the rich cultural heritage that surrounds us. As we delve deeper into the significance of names, we begin to understand their profound impact on our individual and collective identities. They are threads that connect us to our past, our present, and our hopes for the future.

By honouring the stories behind our names, embracing our linguistic diversity, and approaching each other with a spirit of generosity, we can weave a more inclusive and unified South Africa for generations to come.

Donovan Goliath Features In Latest Kreepy Krauly Campaign

Donovan Goliath Features In Latest Kreepy Krauly Campaign

This month sees the launch of Kreepy Krauly on the Wally, a branded content story going viral, starring comedic actor Donovan Goliath and his real-life daughter, Sophia.

Sophia pleads with Goliath to participate in the popular Elf on the Shelf game in the build up to the Festive Season, but he persuades her otherwise. He convinces her that there is a better, local alternative. He dubs it Krauly on the Wally.

Hermias Nel, MD Kreepy Krauly explained, ‘We needed a remarkable commercial both to cut through the clutter and to communicate that your Kreepy Krauly is customisable this Summer.’

He added, ‘Because our pool cleaner has been a star in family pool games for the past 50 years, we’re including waterproof sticker packs with our products for customers to truly personify their Kreepy protagonists or antagonists.’

Goliath said, ‘I loved the script because it comprises these beautiful moments of our girl-dad immersing himself in his daughter’s imaginative play.’

He added, ‘From tea parties with KK – as we affectionately refer to him – to chilling out watching content on the couch, we pushed the humour of the environments in which we saw the pool cleaner, in order to lean in to the metaphor that Kreepy Krauly is a literal part of the South African family.

Goliath concluded, ‘My favourite scene is when I’m braaiing with Kreepy Krauly who is holding a pair of tongs, cooking wors with me. It’s a quintessential South African moment and it signals the build-up to Dezemba, the greatest time on the SA calendar.’

Nel ended, ‘Happy 50th birthday to one of South Africa’s greatest inventions; our Kreepy GOAT, if you will.’

Clockwork, which joined this year’s Nedbank IMC as the exclusive workshop partner, packed a punch with some honest (but funny) conversations at the conference. Modern Marketing is a proud media partner of the Nedbank IMC.

Their ‘Unscripted, unfiltered and probably reckless’ initiative was a creative way of showcasing serious industry topics in a fun and authentic fashion. Industry icons, one of whom had been a keynote speaker earlier in the day, battled it out in a game show type vibe that heralded much laughter.

Hosted by well-known funny man Glen Biderman-Pam, panellists included both marketing and communications industry heavyweights including Mike Sharman; Maps Maponyane, Johanna McDowall, Jessica Wheeler, Marcel Swain, Taz Ramphisa and Tom Manners.

Clockwork is a globally recognised, independent creative and communications agency with headquarters in Johannesburg, Cape Town and London. Since 2013, they have grown into a fully-fledged integrated agency. Led by co-founder Tom Manners, the team has clocked up more than 40+ award winning campaigns including 11 Cannes Lions.

‘Honest conversations like this workshop, let us laugh about the things that we often take too seriously,’ said Manners. ‘The Nedbank IMC was a perfect forum for us to engage and grow with key industry leaders – there’s no other event with so many senior marketers in one place at one time.’

In an industry that’s ever-evolving it’s crucial to keep the marketing conversations alive and thriving so that marketers share and grow together – something that both Clockwork and the Nedbank IMC are committed to doing. ‘It’s precisely why we encourage new partnerships, new speakers and new ideas. With Clockwork as our workshop partner, we are finding innovative ways of sharing our Marketing is Business© message,’ explained Dale Hefer, CEO of the IMC.

Winners Of The 2024 PRISMS Awards Announced

Winners Of The 2024 PRISMS Awards Announced

This year’s PRISMS Awards, held alongside the inaugural PRISMS Summit, celebrated not only the best work in the industry but also the dawn of a new chapter for The Public Relations Institute of Southern Africa (PRISA), as the institute proudly unveiled its refreshed brand and renewed vision for the future.

The theme for the 2024 PRISMS Summit and Awards, ‘Ink’, served as a powerful metaphor for the storytelling craft that lies at the heart of public relations. Just as ink transforms a blank page into a story, PR professionals turn ideas into impactful campaigns that resonate with audiences.

‘This year’s submissions reflected the profound influence of storytelling in shaping brand narratives and public perception. Through the “Ink” theme, campaigns showcased how strategic communications can turn moments into movements, connecting communities and driving meaningful action,’ said Bradly Howland, CEO of Alkemi, President-Elect of PRISA and member of the PRISMS Organising Committee.

According to Paul Reynell, Chief Judge of the PRISMS Awards, the ‘Ink’ theme this year truly captured the essence of our profession. ‘The campaigns we saw were not just communications efforts but works of art, using the power of storytelling to drive change, engagement and connection in the market. These award-winning campaigns blend creativity with strategic intent, reflecting how our industry continues to evolve and influence the world.’

The judging process, involving a panel of esteemed experts from across the industry, identified standout performances across multiple categories. A total of 148 awards were given out at this year’s event.

The ultimate Campaign of the Year was the GoSolr The Light Paper, which was awarded to The Friday Street Club.

Paddington Station Inc. walked away with Grand Prix Agency of the Year and Best Small Agency. Tribeca PR was also recognised as the Best Medium-Sized Agency and Flow Communications as the Best Large Agency of the Year.

Celebrating Engagement, Learning And Connection At The PRISMS Summit

Alongside the excitement of the PRISMS Awards, PRISA hosted its first annual PRISMS Summit, which brought together professionals from across the industry for two days of insightful sessions, workshops, and networking. The Summit focused on addressing the evolving challenges and opportunities facing the communications sector today, including value-based leadership, driving financial sustainability, the integration of AI, responsible communication, and solutions to tackling ethical dilemmas like greenwashing and creating a stance on the role the industry plays in fighting climate change.

Prisa’s Rebrand – Stepping Into A New Era

This year also marked a significant milestone for PRISA, as the institute launched its rebrand at the Awards. The new brand reflects PRISA’s commitment to adapting to the changing landscape of public relations and strengthening its role as a leader in the industry. The rebrand, unveiled by the PRISA team, includes a new logo, updated messaging, and a refreshed digital presence, all designed to capture the renewed energy and forward-looking vision of the organisation.

‘The rebrand signals a bold new chapter for PRISA, one that embodies our unwavering commitment to innovation, leadership, and growth. As the public relations landscape transforms, we are evolving alongside it, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of shaping the future of communications. Our new identity is not just a reflection of who we are today, but a declaration of our vision for tomorrow — to elevate, empower and advocate for the public relations profession across Southern Africa and beyond,’ said Oscar Tshifure, President of PRISA.

ACA Embarks On Refreshed Strategy To Guide And Lead The Industry

ACA Embarks On Refreshed Strategy To Guide And Lead The Industry
Sharleen James, ACA Chairperson and Director, Accenture Song.

Sharleen James, Chairperson of the Association for Communication and Advertising (ACA) and Director, Accenture Song, says the advertising and communications industry has weathered storm after storm, but now is the time for resurgence.

As Chair of the ACA, I’m thrilled to share the incredible momentum we’ve built as we push the boundaries to lead our industry into a vibrant future. Recently, the ACA has faced its share of scrutiny — questions about the relevance and ability of an associations such as the one we have, to lead amidst shrinking margins, and a tough marketing landscape. This has not dampened our resolve, but rather we’ve embraced these challenges head-on. The last 18 months, from both an operational and strategic perspective, have been a period of radical reinvention and focus. We’ve geared up to guide, protect and inform the industry.

We’re here, we’re determined and we’re tackling issues that are critical in our space. There are numerous issues and views to tackle, but we’re one profession, and our determination will ensure we act as one, and speak with one voice.

The Power Of Transformation

We’ve embarked on a comprehensive strategic overhaul, one that has not only revitalised our leadership but also sharpened our value proposition. With a dynamic, experienced and respected Executive Director steering the ship, we’re not just changing perceptions — we’re regaining the unwavering confidence of our members and stakeholders.

Here’s How The ACA Is Making Waves:

1. Maximising Board Impact

Our 26-member board is no ordinary group. These industry leaders are leveraging their diverse skills and talents like never before. Despite the demanding roles they each hold in their respective agencies, there’s a renewed sense of commitment. This isn’t just voluntary work; it’s a passion-driven mission to elevate our industry.

2. Supercharging Member Value

We’re proving that ACA membership is worth every cent. Our basket of benefits, monthly newsletter, and proactive tackling of the Tender and Pitches process are just the beginning. The value we deliver directly impacts our members’ success, and we’re not stopping until every member feels the impact.

3. Revitalising the Effie Awards

Remember when the Effie Awards were met with a lukewarm reception? Those days are gone. The Effies are now the talk of the town, drawing the highest number of entrants this year and featuring an all-star judging panel representing every corner of the industry. The excitement is palpable!

Turning Words into Action: Our Tribes

The groundwork laid by the previous EXCO was solid, and we’re currently in full execution mode. We’re moving from ‘saying’ to ‘doing’, and our refocused strategy targeted at addressing the critical issues an industry board is entrusted with tackling. Enter our specialised committees — our ‘Tribes’ — where every board member is not simply a figurehead or representative, but rather driving meaningful change. Below is an overview of the Tribes that have been constituted, and the core focus for each.

Creativity And Effectiveness

Deputy ACA Chair Luca Gallarellii leads this charge, placing creative effectiveness at the forefront. With the Loeries CEO now represented on the ACA Board, as well as endorsement of the Effie Awards from the Creative Circle, we’re setting the stage for groundbreaking developments.

Transformation And DEI

Thabang Skwambane heads this Tribe, taking on the most pressing issue of our time: diversity, equity, and inclusion. We’re not just ticking boxes; we’re ensuring the ACA plays an integral role in the ongoing review of the Mac Charter Codes. These codes, born from the ACA and shaped by industry stalwarts, are set to drive the transformation our industry desperately needs.

Regulatory Issues

Under Adishia Singh’s leadership, this Tribe is navigating the complex regulatory landscape with finesse. Among others, we’re spearheading the input into highly contentious Copyright Amendment Bill, backed by a powerhouse team well-versed in the regulatory intricacies of our industry.

Industry Research

We’re diving deep, lead by Gillian Rightford, with three major industry research projects, including a Transformational Survey that will reveal the true impact of DEI efforts. This is data that will drive our decisions and set the standard for the future.

Future Of Communication

Jarred Cinman leads this Tribe, with an eye on the future. As technology evolves at lightning speed, we’re keeping our industry ahead of the curve. From Generative AI to innovations that will shape tomorrow, this Tribe is where the super-smart minds of our industry gather to forge the path forward. August marked the launch of the Future of Communication Tribe’s monthly series, AI in Advertising, providing cutting-edge insights into the future of communication. This initiative, among others, sets the stage for continuous engagement, ensuring the ACA remains at the forefront of shaping the industry’s future.

Education And Skills Development

Here’s the irony: South Africa faces high youth unemployment, yet we’re grappling with a skills shortage in our industry. The ACA, together with the Education Tribe under Sarah Dexter’s stewardship, is tackling this head-on. Our Future Ballers event invites young talent to industry events, bridging the gap between senior marketers and the next generation. We’re also setting up a Youth Board and combining bursary efforts with Loeries to create one massive pot of opportunity.

Association Growth

The backbone of a strong association, one that can effectively guide, protect and inform, is a broad, representative and involved membership base. Headed by Derek Coles, the Growth Tribe will focus its core activities on streamlining the basket of benefits on offer, bringing additional members into the fold and seeking added value partnerships within the industry.

Collaborating for a Stronger Industry

We’re not doing this alone however. By working closely with other industry bodies like MASA, IAB, and ARB on joint initiatives, we’re building an industry that’s not just effective but unstoppable. Together, we’re driving growth and striving to get our industry back to its winning ways.

The ACA’s journey from introspection to bold action is proof of our unwavering commitment to tackling the industry’s critical challenges. Our refocused strategy and the establishment of industry Tribes mark the dawn of a new era, moving from promise to performance, one where the ACA leads with impact, innovation, and a relentless drive for success.

Fin-Fluencers Have Gained Popularity Among Gen Z

Fin-Fluencers Have Gained Popularity Among Gen Z

Financial influencers, or fin-fluencers, have gained popularity among Gen Z, with 39% of this generation following them for financial advice. The pandemic highlighted the importance of budgeting and building emergency savings, and interest in financial planning and investing has increased across generations, with 73% of Gen Z’s indicating increased interest in the past two years.

Unlike earlier generations, who relied on more traditional sources for financial education and advice, Zoomers can gain a level of financial literacy at a younger age from social media platforms like TikTok — also known as ‘FinTok’ or ‘StockTok’ (source).

This increased engagement with financial content on social media reflects a larger trend. According to KLA’s YouGov Profiles data, 59% of Gen Z individuals state that social media improves their lives, and 42% report receiving offers from social media that have led to purchases. These statistics highlight the significant influence these platforms have on their financial decisions.

Recognising the influence of fin-fluencers, brands have begun to engage with this generation using these channels. For example, Nedbank’s ChowTown campaign integrated influencers into a 360-degree marketing strategy. Nedbank was able to achieve over 100,000 game plays within three months, demonstrating how financial institutions can leverage influencer marketing to combat financial illiteracy. This approach resonates deeply with Gen Z, who expect brands to support them in building financial resilience.

KLA’s YouGov Profiles shows that 46% of Zoomers trust products from influencers, a notable increase from the 37% reported in 2023, showing a growing positive perception of influencers among this generation.

The data also shows that 76% of Gen Z appreciate it when companies have a moral message, and 70% support brands that are willing to get involved in social issues, highlighting the importance of authenticity and ethical branding when targeting this demographic.

Despite their reliance on social media, Gen Z is not naïve about the pitfalls when it comes to receiving financial advice using this platform. Profiles data shows that 64% of Gen Z distrust how companies use their data, and 42% admit they are uncomfortable using online banking, showing the need for trustworthy digital financial tools.

Zoomers are critical of the ‘picture-perfect’ mentality that dominates social media and are actively searching for authenticity. This is also reflected in their choice of influencers, with 48% of Gen Z following influencers they can relate to on a personal level (source).

While the rise of fin-fluencers provides Gen Z with relatable and accessible financial guidance, it’s important to note that according to KLA’s YouGov Profiles data, nearly 50% of Zoomers still find financial matters confusing; 44% worry they won’t be able to save for a rainy day, and 27% admit they would not be able to deal with a financial crisis.

The data also shows the positive impact of fin-fluencers: 72% of Zoomers say they’re more careful with their finances than they used to be. This shift towards greater financial responsibility suggests that, with the right support from brands and credible influencers, Gen Z could build the financial resilience they seek.

As South Africa’s Gen Z navigates the complex landscape of financial literacy, the role of fin-fluencers is becoming increasingly significant, and brands and financial institutions that can provide genuine and trustworthy guidance could find themselves in a strong position to connect with this generation.

Bob Glenister, Roland DG South Africa with Designer of the Year Jessica van Wyk.

In second place was Eljanee Olivier, who won R105,000 and in third place was Annelle Westley, who won R60,000. The winners were announced during a Roland event held during the Sign Africa Expo on 12 September.

Second place: Eljanee Olivier.

Explaining the inspiration behind her winning design, van Wyk said, ‘I’d been reading a lot of fantasy books, and when I read the design competition brief, it just triggered this whole fantasy world in my head and I thought to bring that to life.’

‘I needed a challenge. I wanted to challenge myself and try something new, so I entered the competition just for fun.’

Designers could let their imaginations run wild as they embarked on a journey with Roland to shape a brighter and more innovative future together. Entrants needed to choose one client brief, and using their artistic brilliance, transformed these into something ground-breaking. Once the brief was chosen, entrants needed to submit a logo that screamed ‘wow!’, a vehicle wrap that turned heads on the road, a T-shirt that inspired everyone who lays eyes on it, and an advertising poster that made jaws drop.

Third place winner Annelle Westley with Bob Glenister, Roland DG South Africa.
