SodaStream Launches Global Campaign In SA

SodaStream Launches Global Campaign In SA

Inspired by the 1986 hit ‘Push it’ by the US hip-hop group Salt-N-Pepa, the campaign offers a new take on the brand and its products, reflecting its Push for Better ethos in a new way.

At the helm is a new commercial, which kicks off with the push of a button, setting a vibrant new SodaStream world in motion.

Bursting with visuals and dance, the lyrics of the Salt-N-Pepa’s hit have been reimagined to speak to the benefits of SodaStream’s core product functions including freshness, flavour customisation and sustainability.

‘We are thrilled to launch our new Push it real good! campaign into the SA market. Fizzing with fun, freshness and an iconic soundtrack, the creative perfectly encapsulates our key brand ethos of Push for Better in a whole new light. SodaStream is an innovative, lively and sustainable brand,’ SodaStream SA general manager, Jacqui Carnelley, said.

‘We challenge the status quo and push forward by helping people make better choices for themselves and the planet. Push for Better drives everything we do, and that’s exactly what our new campaign represents.’

The campaign is live in Germany and Australia and being rolled out in other global markets, including the USA and Canada.

HeimatTBWA creative director Michael Roeder said the agency focused on entertainment throughout the project, communicating every benefit SodaStream has to offer in a playful way.

‘This is advertising that people like to see because it is not even perceived as such and, in the style of a music video, is fully in line with the spirit of the times,’ he said.

Push it real good! was produced by Stereo Films München GmbH. The film was shot in Zagreb, Croatia, and directed by the trio Lars Knorrn, Jacquline Hochmuth and director of photography Nikita Kuzmenko.

Penquin Brings The Gift Of Literacy To Young Learners

Penquin Brings The Gift Of Literacy To Young Learners

In honour of International Literacy Day, brand and communications agency, Penquin, celebrated by hosting a special book and art fair at Little People Pre-School in Riverlea, Johannesburg, on 7 September 2024. Partnering with the Dr. CL Smith Foundation, an organisation founded by the late Dr. Clifford Leon Smith, the event aimed to bring the gift of literacy to young learners who lack access to books in rural and underprivileged communities.

Dr. Smith, a visionary doctor and philanthropist, recognised the importance of literacy at the foundation phase and dedicated his life to distributing books to children in need. Today, his legacy is carried on by his grandson, Malcolm Mooi, who continues the foundation’s vital work.

The initiative, themed ‘Discover the World One Page at a Time,’ aligns with the agency’s mission to empower individuals through meaningful contributions to society.

As part of the event, Penquin donated goodie bags to the students, each containing five individual readers, a colouring book, and an activity book. Additionally, parents and teachers received books on how to encourage children to read, providing them with tools to foster a love of learning at home and in the classroom. These books, authored by Mooi, share valuable lessons such as teamwork, perseverance, kindness and compassion.

The fair featured a variety of exciting activities, including an Xbox station, a craft corner, and a live mural painting by local artist John Adams. The mural, depicting a girl whom the children affectionately named ‘Miranda’, added a special touch to the event. To ensure everyone felt nourished and supported, hot meals were provided for 100 children and adults, with teatime treats sponsored by The Kitchen Mafia. Bic Stationery SA generously contributed stationery packs, crayons, and pens for the school.

‘At Penquin, we believe in the power of education and literacy to change lives. Supporting foundation phase literacy aligns perfectly with our mission to empower individuals and communities,’ said Veronica Moleele, Penquin CEO. ‘Through our partnership with the Dr. CL Smith Foundation, we’re excited to continue making a tangible difference in the lives of children who might not otherwise have access to books and resources.’

‘We are deeply grateful to Penquin for their generous support of our 5th Annual Art and Book Fair,’ said Mooi, Founder and CEO at the Dr. CL Smith Foundation. ‘Their contribution went beyond financial support —their hands-on approach and in-kind donations truly embodied the spirit of teamwork and cooperation that we celebrate in our Discovery Series 3 books. It’s been an inspiring partnership, built on shared values of kindness, unity, and working together to create a lasting impact. We look forward to continuing this incredible journey with Penquin.’

The celebration of International Literacy Day extended beyond the preschool as Penquin also provided 25 sets of books to its staff members, reinforcing the agency’s belief in supporting not only communities but also the families of its employees.

The Role Of AI In Marketing And How The Mighty Call To Action Can Benefit

The Role Of AI In Marketing And How The Mighty Call To Action Can Benefit
Jeané van Greunen, Helm.

In a recent presentation to the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) in Johannesburg, Jeané van Greunen, Chief Client Officer at Helm, delved into the interplay between tech innovation and market demands, shedding light on the important role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in modern marketing strategies. Emphasising the prowess of AI with the timeless essence of the human touch, van Greunen shared a story of the evolution of marketing from traditional approaches to the AI-driven landscape of today.

In the bygone era of the 1990s, marketing relied heavily on human partnerships and conventional media channels like print, TV and radio to build brand presence and engage audiences. During the transition to the digital age in the late ’90s and early 2000s, the focus shifted towards digital interfaces, customer empowerment and online transactions, setting the stage for a shift in marketing strategies.

‘The transformative impact of the 2000s into 2010 revolutionised marketing by enabling precise targeting, real-time interactions, advanced analytics and process automation. Marketers were empowered to work smarter and achieve remarkable, and measurable, results with ease. This shift laid the groundwork for the position we find ourselves in today, where AI-driven strategies are driving personalised marketing initiatives to new heights,’ she said.

Today, AI plays a central role in creating hyper-personalised customer interactions, insights, and automated strategies, ushering in a new era of marketing precision and relevance. ‘Picture a future where AI-powered conversations scale Calls to Action (CTAs) into hyper-personalised engagements across different domains, brands, and businesses, leveraging unified data platforms, real-time analytics, predictive analytics, enhanced customer experiences, and continuously learning to optimise marketing outcomes. That future is closer than you think.’

Products like these have been around for a while, but with the evolution of AI – especially in the last two years – the possibilities are becoming more and more tangible. Intelligent Assistants can now capture your leads, engage with them, and help you convert them without you having to lift a finger. Add technology like Natural Language Understanding and you can do this in all 11 spoken South African languages. AI is truly taking marketing to another level.

As AI continues to redefine marketing practices, van Greunen reminded industry professionals of the enduring importance of CTAs as the cornerstone of customer engagement. Amidst the allure of advanced AI tools and visually stunning campaigns, she emphasised that CTAs need to resonate with audiences on a hyper-relevant level, compelling them to act and drive conversions.

‘In a world where technological advancements abound, at the heart of every successful marketing endeavour lies the fundamental human need for compelling reasons to engage. By combining AI innovation with human experience, marketers can navigate the evolving marketing landscape with confidence and creativity, ensuring that the mighty CTA remains a powerful driver of customer action and business success,’ concluded van Greunen.

Dove Changing How AI Generates Images Of Beauty

Dove Changing How AI Generates Images Of Beauty

Since its inception, mass media has been criticised for promoting unattainable standards of beauty. From airbrushing to contouring, Photoshop, and more recently, social media filters, the media has long been in the business of promoting a standard of beauty that’s ‘flawless’, ‘perfect’ and impossible for the average woman to achieve in real life.

Now, with AI-generated imagery becoming more prolific, the perpetuation of perfection as a standard of beauty is being exponentially reinforced. It’s estimated that by 2025, 90% of the content we engage with could be AI generated.

It was with this in mind that Dove took a pledge earlier this year never to use AI-generated models in its advertising in lieu of real women.

However, the brand soon realised that by taking this stand, it would still only be able to influence the imagery in its own campaigns. Thousands of brands would still be using cost-effective AI-generated images of women in their advertising, marketing and other media. And because AI is trained on existing material that promotes stereotypical, predominantly Western-skewed beauty ideals, they would, in the process, be perpetuating the age-old problem. Dove decided to change that.

Dove and creative agency VML South Africa devised a plan to train AI to include human characteristics typically labelled as flaws, such as age spots, freckles, wrinkles and vitiligo, as well as varying skin tones and diverse ethnic features. The aim: to teach AI, those using it, and the audiences they’re targeting that real beauty lies in the ‘imperfect’ physical idiosyncrasies that make us human.

To bring the vision to life, software giant Adobe gave the team early access to their Firefly beta application programming interface (API), which they embedded into a closed-system Real Beauty Generation microsite. Adobe Firefly and Adobe Express are products within the Adobe Creative Cloud suite that designers and artists use to create content via text-to-image AI. Adobe users generated up to 1 billion images per month towards the end of 2023.

Through the microsite, users can refine generated images to include more human characteristics using a drop-down menu of prompts. Users then rate the pre- and post- Real Beauty images. This rating, as well as the prompt sequence, is sent to Adobe to build on its AI image generation technology.

The team also partnered with body positivity expert Zuraida Jardine-Lindberg, who provided key insights and considerations in refining the prompts.

‘For the success of our project, it’s important to strike a balance between diversity in ethnic and racial representation, without bias or stereotype as a baseline to apply our Real Beauty modifiers,’ explained Theo Ferreira, Executive Creative Director at VML South Africa. ‘We’ve balanced this out with simplified frontend descriptors for the dropdown fields, and more detailed backend descriptors that will be fed to Firefly through the API. The frontend descriptors will be refined with our body confidence expert to ensure we are using the correct language.’

Reflecting The Nuances Of Africa

The African continent – and even just South Africa – is a prime example of how generalisations fall short. When prompted to generate an image of a South African, AI has a natural skew towards black South Africans. The Real Beauty tool makes the AI more representative by introducing nuances.

‘We have an opportunity to drive further African and South African representation within Generative AI through prompts reflective of the diverse races and ethnicities in our region,’ said Dominique Baxewanos, Creative Director at VML South Africa.

Challenging The Narrative

Dove’s Real Beauty tool forms part of the brand’s broader goal for everyone to feel beautiful – a goal that has informed their advertising since 2004.

‘Twenty years ago, Dove researched how women and girls perceived themselves and found that only 2% thought they were beautiful. That was before filters and social media,’ said Lerato Dumisa, Marketing Manager Dove Masterbrand at Unilever. ‘Sadly, two decades later, things are not much better. We surveyed thousands of people across 20 countries and found that 1 in 3 felt the need to alter their appearance based on content they see online, even when they know what they are seeing is not true.’

‘It has become part of our brand DNA at Dove to challenge the narrative that promotes that kind of thinking. Women, and young girls especially, need to see normal people who look like them portrayed as beautiful. AI is a powerful tool. We need to use it to do good.’

IMM Institute Conference And Awards Dinner To Be Held In 2025

IMM Institute Conference And Awards Dinner To Be Held In 2025

A revamped experience, including both the prestigious IMM Institute Excellence Awards Dinner and an illuminating speaker session, will now be held next March.

Irene Gregory, CEO, Institute of Marketing Management, released the following statement:

The decision to postpone the Conference and Awards, planned for 17 October, wasn’t taken lightly and was informed by various factors, including that there are many talented marketing and supply chain individuals and teams who may not yet have completed showcase-worthy projects by the initial end date for nominations. By extending the nomination period to cover the full 2024 cycle, we aim to provide a broader window for participants to submit their accomplishments, ensuring that all worthy contributions are considered and celebrated.

Our gala Awards Dinner, which promises to be an informative and glamorous evening, has been postponed to March, with top marketers and supply chain professionals set to be honoured at the event, with an extended deadline for award nominations to 15 January.

At the banquet, we will be handing out our coveted IMM Institute Excellence Awards in ten categories, for which we have so far received 31 nominations, each of which is being carefully considered and is in the running for the 2024 Awards. By extending the closing date for nominations, we hope to encourage more people to put forward marketing and supply chain champions.

We will also host keynote speakers from the industry who will address the planned 2024 IMM Institute Conference topics centred around the theme ‘Fusion of Functions: Marketing and Supply Chain – Partnership for People, Prosperity and the Planet.’

Of particular importance at the Awards Dinner are the two Lifetime Achievement Awards in Marketing and Supply Chain respectively, which will be bestowed alongside other accolades:

· Marketer of the Year.
· Emerging Marketer of the Year.
· Marketing Student of the Year.
· Corporate Marketing Team of the Year.
· Supply Chain Professional of the Year.
· Supply Chain Student of the Year.
· Corporate Supply Chain Team of the Year.
· Entrepreneur of the Year.

It’s going to be a thought-provoking and exciting evening, and we look forward to seeing all of you there!

This growth strategy aims to partner with brand companies on a category-exclusive basis to grow brands not only in distribution and sales but also in brand equity.

‘This isn’t just a shopper and media solution. It’s an entire economic and sector-defining product,’ added van Vuuren. ‘With the perfect mix of in-store exclusivity, digital precision, financial inclusion, and content that doesn’t feel like an ad, RAPT Commerce is redefining what it means to market in the informal sector.’

Report Sheds Light On How The Next Generation Is Shaping The Future Of PR

Report Sheds Light On How The Next Generation Is Shaping The Future Of PR

The International Communications Consultancy Organisation’s (ICCO’s) Next-Gen PR Report with Opinium reveals what creativity, mental health and well-being, and AI mean for future leaders in PR.

ICCO’s Next Gen Group is a dynamic team of young PR practitioners dedicated to shaping the future of the industry. The ICCO Next-Gen PR Report 2023 – 2024 offers critical insights into the evolving landscape of public relations and the strategic steps needed to empower the future leaders of this field.

Grzegorz Szczepański, President of ICCO, commented: ‘The ICCO Next Gen Group was established to ensure that the voices of emerging PR professionals are heard and valued in shaping the future of our industry. Our dedicated team, representing diverse regions worldwide, has focused on understanding and addressing the unique challenges faced by young professionals. Through the ICCO Next-Gen PR Report 2023 – 2024, we aimed to uncover key drivers, challenges, and opportunities for the next generation. The report highlights that while creativity remains a central motivation, there is a growing need for purpose-driven work and support for mental well-being. By actively engaging with these insights, we are committed to developing best practices and solutions that will not only attract but also nurture the future leaders of public relations.’

The report highlights that while salary remains a top priority for 60% of respondents when considering job opportunities, factors such as career growth potential (49%), work-life balance (39%), and company culture (29%) also play significant roles in their decision-making process. This diverse set of motivations underscores the need for the PR industry to create environments that not only foster creativity but also offer meaningful impact and growth opportunities.

A standout finding is that 71% of young professionals identify growth and development as their key professional inspirations, challenging the stereotype that Gen Z seeks an easier path and revealing instead a generation eager to tackle professional challenges and advance in their careers.

Despite the positive drivers, the ICCO Next-Gen PR Report 2023 – 2024 also uncovers challenges, with two-thirds (64%) of respondents reporting a negative impact on their mental health and well-being due to their job in the past year. This statistic demands an urgent need for PR agencies to prioritise employee well-being and mental health support.

Looking ahead, the report showcases a workforce with a mixed sense of optimism about PR as a career path, with 68% of respondents planning to stay in the PR industry for the foreseeable future, yet only a quarter (28%) expressing a desire to make it their lifelong career.

In order to retain quality talent in the industry, the report uncovers key skills and areas for development that will shape the industry’s next era. Nearly half of the respondents (47%) emphasised the importance of mastering AI skills, reflecting the growing integration of technology in PR and the need to embrace technological advancements. Furthermore, the report shows where the next generation differs in its views from that of agency leaders interviewed in the ICCO World Report. The Next Gen ranks skills such as crisis counselling and creativity significantly higher – 50% vs. 27% and 37% vs. 22% respectively – while agency leaders focus on strategic consulting and purpose/ESG – 40% vs. 33% and 32% vs. 20% respectively.

‘It’s not surprising that there’s a disparity between generations when it comes to their view of the industry, but it is crucial to be mindful of this to ensure we’re attracting and, perhaps more importantly, retaining the best talent. The results indicate that there is a need to start having open and honest conversations, so we can bridge the gaps between these groups. The key priorities for current business leaders should be investing in workplace culture, mental health support and competitive compensation. While none of this is done overnight, we hope this year’s ICCO Next-Gen PR Report helps to highlight some of the most important considerations for this next generation,’ said Morten Vester, Haldrup of the ICCO Next Gen Group.

The ICCO Next Gen Group emphasises the need for the industry to adapt and evolve in response to the findings, which will be presented and discussed at the ICCO Global Summit 2024 in Istanbul on 9th and 10th of October. The group is committed to working closely with all parts of the industry to highlight best practices, explore new ideas, and ensure that the voices of young professionals are not only heard but acted upon. As the report concluded, ‘The future of PR lies in the hands of these young professionals. It’s time we started listening to what they have to say.’

2024 New Generation Awards Crowns Winners Of The Most Innovative And Engaging Performance-Based Work

The New Generation Awards represent the pinnacle of achievement in South Africa, for social and digital media, integrated marketing and the online tech sectors. This year’s 12th edition attracted over 500 submissions, from 100 corporates and agencies, with the winners announced at a packed banquet awards ceremony in Sandton, on Thursday 26 September. Modern Marketing is the proud media partner of these prestigious awards.

Stephen Paxton, founder of the awards, remarked on the exceptional quality of this year’s submissions, highlighting the innovative and engaging work displayed by many new agencies and corporates, representing hundreds of South Africa’s best-loved brands.

KCP - New Generation Awards-7

The analysis of numerous submissions indicates an increasing prevalence of Influencer Marketing, Technical Innovation and strategic employment of Content Marketing. The pivotal role of virality in numerous campaigns is notable, particularly in the success of low-budget executions. Additionally, a growing number of brands are venturing into the realm of Podcasting.

Paxton expressed gratitude to all the participants for their remarkable campaigns and the 24 esteemed judges for their hard work and valuable insights, during the past three weeks. Special thanks were extended to the Bronze sponsor, Helm – Africa’s CX Innovation Experts, the Brand sponsor, Wimpy SA, the Category sponsor, DStv, and the official media partner, Modern Marketing.

The 2024 awards saw the unveiling of their newly redesigned New Gen Trophies and the rebranding of the Main Overall Awards to The Black Onyx Awards. Paxton commented that, winning one of these prestigious awards was an absolute triumph! The Black Onyx symbolises enhanced communication and self-expression, just like the winners of these top honours whose individual performances, and creative work, are sure to leave a lasting impression.

2024 New Generation Awards Crowns Winners Of The Most Innovative And Engaging Work

New Gen highlighted that if a campaign exceeded their three primary benchmarks by a significant margin, it will not receive a highly commended award. Instead, it will be given multiple Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards as appropriate.

To provide some context, some campaigns that were awarded Silver had achieved Gold status, and some that received Bronze had achieved Silver status. As a result, the top-scoring campaigns will be recognised in order of their ranking. New Gen also awards multiple Gold Silver, and Bronze awards to campaigns that have received the same overall score from the judges.

KCP - New Generation Awards-9

The big winners on the night included Dialogue, who were crowned the Black Onyx Small Agency of the Year, Clockwork, who walked away with the Black Onyx Med-Large Agency of the Year, and SA Rugby, who stole the show, winning multiple awards including the Black Onyx Award for Digital Brand of the Year, Online Strategy of the Year, and Overall Social and Digital Corporate of the year Awards, by Dialogue.
