Talent Brand And Mobitainment Launch Real Heroes Connect Platform

Real Heroes Connect is an edutainment platform that was conceived as a campaign vehicle for teaching South Africa’s workforce on how to protect themselves from the coronavirus during the first stage of lockdown, when it was imperative to keep essential workers safe and healthy.

‘We are incredibly excited about Real Heroes Connect. It is a pragmatic solution to a very real problem that affects us all in many ways,’ said Candice Goodman, managing director of Mobitainment (the company that enabled the engaging tech on the videos).

Apart from the interactive questions embedded in-video, there are three features that make the initiative particularly noteworthy: the fact that they are available in multiple South African languages, the use of gamification, and the use of reverse billing.

‘To fulfil our objective of educating as many South Africans as possible, our big focus was on inclusivity, allowing us to reach and engage with people in their selected language, even with those without mobile data – to entice them to watch and learn, interactively test what they had learnt, and encourage them to easily share the message to ensure that the campaign goes viral,’ Goodman stated.

The need for the platform has expanded to include staff members in offices, schools and factories throughout the country. ‘After all, just one infected employee can place an entire workforce at risk and necessitate the closing of the workplace for deep cleaning, affecting the company’s bottom line,’ noted Jo Watt, whose company Talent Brand created Real Heroes Connect after being awarded a discretionary grant from the Health and Welfare Sector Training Authority (HWSeta).

Watt explained that Real Heroes Connect comprises a series of nine animated videos, available in both static and interactive format. The static videos may be broadcast on workplace premises, while interactive videos may be downloaded to be viewed at the user’s convenience. Importantly, viewers who complete watching the videos and then share them are entered into a draw to win their share of airtime daily. The videos contain information about coronavirus symptoms, how to prevent the spread of the virus, how to get tested, getting to work safely, physical distancing and when to self-isolate.

‘This speaks to the campaign’s four goals: to encourage viewers to complete watching each video, which will lead to the fulfilment of the second goal: ensuring employees receive comprehensive education about the virus. This, in turn, is ensured by the inclusion of testing material within each video, so that employers can be sure that the content has been understood. There is also a viral component to the campaign, as demonstrated by incentives to share the material. Finally, each video download link contains a code that makes it possible to profile viewers, creating a record of key demographics such as geography, workplace and gender but, more importantly, tracking the journey at each step in this process provides incredible insights into South Africans’ understanding and behaviour around the virus,’ Goodman said.

‘Real Heroes Connect is available in four major South African languages: English, Afrikaans, isiZulu and Setswana. This ensures that we are able to reach a broader audience. However, we have also used voiceovers and visuals rather than text so that we are able to transcend communication barriers, especially amongst populations with a lower literacy rate,’ Goodman said.

The gamification of the interactive videos is another standout feature. Although interactive videos are used overseas, this is the first time South African viewers are being tracked at each step, allowing them to be rewarded for their engagement. ‘Points are earned every time an individual watches a video to the end, every time they answer a question in the quiz that follows correctly, and every time they share the video with someone else,’ said Goodman. Mobitainment has won awards for its creative use of gamification in the past; a technique which employs the principles of gaming in the business environment, allowing users to earn rewards as they progress to a new level once they have completed a certain task.

The fact that the videos can be shared by the viewers themselves, across many social media platforms is significant, because it places control in the user’s hands and so follows the spirit and best practice of the PoPI Act. Importantly, viewers who download the video are not charged for doing so, nor do they use any data. The process of reverse billing is employed to ensure that the entire transaction can take place without users incurring any costs.

Joe Public Announces Next Chapter In Delivering On Their Growth Purpose

Joe Public United announced that 60% of the company has been acquired by black shareholders. This deal is a significant milestone in the local advertising and marketing industry, as it results in Joe Public United now becoming the largest majority black-owned, independent agency group in South Africa.

The transaction sees three senior agency executives, Khuthala Gala Holten, Xolisa Dyeshana and Mpume Ngobese, acquiring 26% through a newly created company, Ikamva Lakusasa, and 100% black-owned private equity investment company, Senatla Capital, buying 34%. In line with its mandate, Senatla Capital has funded a substantial portion of the acquisition by Ikamva Lakusasa. The new structure also includes a mechanism for equity to be made available, in time, to existing and future Joe Public staff.

The remaining 40% of the shareholding is retained by the current shareholders, including Group CEO, Gareth Leck, Chief Creative Officer, Pepe Marais and Group Strategic Officer, Laurent Marty.

Noted Leck, ‘This is the culmination of a journey that began a long time ago and included lots of hard work and late nights in pursuit of a dream to create genuine transformation in the brand communications industry. We’re confident that the structure of the transaction allows us to authentically transform the company into a majority black-owned entity, while retaining our cherished independence and ensuring that high levels of ownership remain with the leadership team.’ Leck describes the transaction as a seminal moment in the 22-year-old agency’s history. ‘Holten, Dyeshana and Ngobese have all made a massive and valued contribution in growing Joe Public United into the agency group it has become.’

Senatla Capital was founded by CEO, Owen Maubane, in 2010 with the mission of investing capital in South African companies and helping to transform the South African economy. He said, ‘Senatla seeks to foster a culture of excellence, integrity and a commitment to transformation. Joe Public is a leader and innovator in the media and advertising space, led by an exceptional and visionary team, and we see Senatla as being able to provide a catalyst to accelerate its future growth.’ Maubane now becomes the Chairman of the agency group.

Leck said, ‘Over the years we have been approached by numerous internationally owned advertising and consultancy groups who have wanted to invest in Joe Public United. But based on our firm belief in the power of independence, of being a South African-owned entity, and of having our leadership team with vested interests and ownership in the company, all of these offers were rejected. When we were approached by Senatla, we knew we had found the right partner to create the optimum ownership structure.’

Gala Holten, Managing Director of Joe Public, who also forms part of Ikamva Lakusasa said, ‘Dyeshana and I have been with Joe Public for 15 years, and Ngobese has been here for 7 years, and we are steeped in its culture. We not only look forward to being part of the group’s exciting new growth path but also to be part of the transformation process in this industry and opening the way for more black ownership in business.’

First Sign Language-Supported Podcast Aims To Bring Listeners More Inclusive Content

Blind History series has launched the first-ever South African sign language-supported podcast. The project aims to remove the barrier to information and ultimately introduce new audiences to the world of podcasts, which is especially relevant during these uncertain times.

Blind History is a collaboration between Gareth Cliff from CliffCentral and Anthony Mederer, the MD of Taylor Blinds and Shutters. The podcast aims to bring compelling stories of the past to the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

CliffCentral’s Greg Cohen said, ‘When we were approached by Thuli Zikalala (one of the eleven South African Translators’ Institute (SATI) accredited interpreters in South Africa) with a concept to make the medium more accessible, we decided to create South African sign language interpreted videos of our content, starting with our popular podcast series Blind History. As far as we are aware, this is a first-of-its-kind concept that we’re extremely proud of.’

Cohen said that inclusive content is important, especially in a diverse country like South Africa. ‘The easier it is for people to access content, the better. We need to embrace inclusivity and not exclusivity. This is especially true with podcasts, where the audience chooses you and you don’t target your listeners. It’s important to provide information and lessons on an equal playing field to the audience,’ Cohen added.

‘CliffCentral.com and Taylor Blinds and Shutters are an open-minded, forward-thinking team. I value the opportunity to bridge different communities, create awareness to professional SASL interpreters, and make content more inclusive and accessible to the deaf and hard-of-hearing community,’ said Zikalala.

Blind History won a Sunday Times Gen Next Gold Award in 2019 and is now in its third season, which comprises 13 episodes. The series consists of short freestanding episodes, each about an interesting person in history. This has included Alexander the Great, the Kennedys, Caesar Augustus and King Henry VII.

‘We like to talk about our favourite people in history,’ said Gareth Cliff, Founder of CliffCentral.com and Co-founder of Blind History. ‘Some of them are favourites because they were really good people, and some because they were fascinating and evil.’

Although the production of the podcasts is sponsored by Taylor Blinds and Shutters, Blind History has indicated that is not a marketing campaign. Instead, it simply aims to share the passion of ‘these self-confessed history nerds’ with the world.

Each episode airs on CliffCentral, while the podcasts can be found on:

  • Apple Podcasts.
  • Spotify.
  • CliffCentral app.

Primedia Outdoor And Audi Run First Prime-Intelligence Ad Campaign

Prime-Intelligence (Prime(i)), offers the unique opportunity for mass personalisation through Primedia Outdoor’s state-of-the-art digital advertising platforms on both roadside and in the mall environment.

Primedia Outdoor successfully executed its latest technically innovative product offering, Prime(i) Road and Prime(i) Mall where they partnered with Audi South Africa to promote its new Audi A1 model in an innovative OOH campaign. They served highly-targeted audiences a playful tongue-in-cheek creative message with the use of Prime(i) Road.

The Prime-Intelligence technology-enabled digital advertising platform allows for hyper-targeted and relevant brand messaging, enabling advertisers to communicate to their intended audience on a whole new level with the use of digital billboards.

Prime(i) Road uses anonymous vehicle recognition technology to target consumers of specific vehicles. All vehicle details are matched with an anonymised vehicle specification database and ads are triggered and served automatically, based on specific vehicle make and model when stationary. The pioneering technology is unique to Primedia Outdoor’s urban LED screens and currently rolled-out onto six digital billboards located on main arterials and at key intersections across Johannesburg and Pretoria. Prime(i) Road offers brands highly defined targeting ability and greater efficiency – reaching core audiences with no wastage.

Kirtanya Van Tonder, digital marketing manager of Audi South Africa said, ‘The vehicle recognition technology used by Primedia Outdoor on its digital billboards is ideal for targeting drivers of specific vehicles with a unique message. We were excited to have been the first automotive brand to use this innovative technology in the launch of key models to the South African market. This digital innovation was quite fitting to Audi’s brand claim of vorsprung (advancement).’

Also commenting on the Audi A1 innovative campaign is Jamie Norgarb, general manager of PHD Media, ‘When we first learnt that Primedia Outdoor were launching the vehicle recognition software, we knew it would be a perfect fit for Audi. At PHD, we believe that Innovation drives ROI, and are always on the lookout for innovative opportunities that are strongly aligned to our client’s objectives.’

Furthermore, Prime(i) Mall makes use of anonymous video analytics software that allows advertisers to serve target-specific messaging to their intended audience in the mall environment, with ads being triggered based on shoppers’ distinct facial features. Prime(i) Mall is currently installed onto 24 of Primedia Outdoor’s digital mall navigation units in 10 key malls across South Africa.

‘We pride ourselves as the experts in dynamic creative optimisation and are committed in delivering intelligent, targeted and seamless digital Out-of-Home campaigns to our valued clients with the use of the latest technology,’ said Jorja Wilkins, marketing and marketing services executive of Primedia Outdoor.

In total, Primedia Outdoor has 30 technology-enabled cameras installed onto its digital assets, fully equipped with sophisticated and comprehensive data sources to provide advertisers with powerful and enriched audience data in real-time.

Oliver South Africa Appoints Business Unit Director

Nthabiseng Lekoaletsoe, new Business Unit Director.

Oliver South Africa announced the appointment of Nthabiseng Lekoaletsoe as its new Business Unit Director. Lekoaletsoe’s journey in the advertising industry began with household names such as Standard Bank, Microsoft and Coca-Cola.

This fantastic start evolved into a career featuring the ‘who’s who’ of well-known companies and entities – from consumer brands and financial services to public sector departments and major telecommunications enterprises. Lekoaletsoe’s appointment will further bolster Oliver South Africa’s offering and provide new vivacity to the brand, reinforcing Oliver’s commitment to its clients.

Armed with over a decade’s worth of experience in the industry, Lekoaletsoe joined Oliver South Africa in February this year. Her management and executive oversight of teams and campaigns has provided her with the expertise required to fulfil the role as Business Director, but Oliver’s approach to the market is what truly attracted her to the role and made her the ‘perfect fit’

Lekoaletsoe explained, ‘While cost is important, good marketing is about making a lasting impression that the customer can own and build on. What made Oliver so appealing as a company is that the business is all about adding value by being efficient, strategic and results driven. Innovation leads the conversation, which is why Oliver strives to remain at the forefront of ever-changing market trends to integrate and optimise for prudent client satisfaction. The on-site model is innovative itself, it creates flexibility that I haven’t often encountered.’

Oliver’s business model is building on-site agencies. With this approach, teams are placed side-by-side and on-site with clients to understand their business and collaborate proactively. The model creates more agility, boosts innovation and speeds up decision-making while reducing overheads, by using every resource to its intended capacity.

Crucially for Lekoaletsoe, this approach speaks to her belief that effective marketing is about relationships with the customer, the brand, as well as the marketing teams. ‘My ‘People First’ approach helps me understand the power and value of building relationships with my team, which will drive growth and efficient ways of working. I believe when you grow your people, the business grows.’

Oliver South Africa is thrilled to welcome her to the team as our new Business Unit Director, said Paul van den Berg, Oliver’s Chief Evangelist, ‘It’s already rare to find someone as experienced with different major brands as Lekoaletsoe is. But it’s her talent with people and business that stand out more than everything else. She is a wizard at bringing the two together, adding empathy and relevance where there are only cold numbers and vision statements. We are very excited to have her on our team.’

Industry Interview: Mpume Ngobese On Her Journey To Heading A Digital Specialist Agency

Mpume Ngobese Managing Director of Joe Public Connect.

In our exclusive Modern Marketing Industry Interview series, Managing Director of Joe Public Connect, Mpume Ngobese, discusses how her career in publishing inspired her switch to communication and advertising, which landed her in a leadership role working with creatives and executing successful purpose-driven ad campaigns.

Early life

Ngobese studied a Bcom Honours Degree with her four majors being: Marketing, Business Management, Change Management and Training and Development. ‘I was playing it safe because I also could not commit to one particular industry, so I covered all my bases. I actually landed in the right industry,’ said Ngobese.

Ngobese started her career in 2002 at Johnnic Communications, now known as the Tiso Blackstar Group. ‘I was working in the group editorial office where I got to interact with a lot of incredible journalists and editors across different sectors and was exposed to conceptual writing and advertising. That appealed to me, and that is how I made the switch to communication and advertising,’ she said.

She then moved to the agency world in 2004, where she was involved in both trade and customer marketing. She branched into brand strategy and design, which led to the Beyond-The-Line communication space at Joe Public United. ‘This is where I got to work on amazing campaigns for various clients.’

In 2018, she stepped into a managing director role at Joe Public Ignite (beyond-the-line specialist agency within the group) that focuses on experiential and integrated accounts. She is currently the managing director of Joe Public Connect, the digital specialist agency within the Joe Public United group.

Career highlights

‘I have had a lot of stand-out moments, but a notable one is when I was approached by Gareth Lerk (Joe Public United Group CEO). I was doing my hand-over status with him as he was leaving for Thailand the following day. He randomly launched into a conversation about an opportunity that had come up within the agency and that the shareholders wanted me to fill that position.’ She did not think twice about taking the opportunity.

What have you enjoyed most about working in this industry?

‘This is a tough industry to be in, but this same industry has really fed my spirit, as I could not easily imagine life without art, creativity and ideas.’ Ngobese loves the creativity that she is exposed to, as well as seeing ‘genius work coming alive’. ‘I think we should actually be often given the creative license that we deserve as that would make our lives perfect,’ she added.

Industry changes

Although the change has been slow, Ngobese has seen an increasing number of women having a seat at the table and contributing to making important decisions. ‘Now more than ever, agencies are recognising the need for diversity and representation, not only for BEE scores but rather using diversity to introduce rich views and debates, which I believe leads to a richness of thinking when it comes to creativity as well as building businesses.’

Keys to success

‘Stay true to yourself. Do not measure your value in comparison to those of others. Learn the art of patience. Understand that success comes through experience, and with experience comes failures and successes, which then ultimately leads to your growth. Success in this industry is also about being brave, daring, humble and the willingness to learn in order to grow.’

Watch the rest of of the interview below where Ngobese tells us more about her hobbies and interests, executing a successful campaign and major 2020 industry trends.

Ngobese’s favourite campaign is the Jet: Clear the stigma campaign on breast cancer, which is based on insights that she personally resonates with as a black woman. The research around breast cancer and black women in South Africa shows a low rate of breast cancer incidents but the mortality rate is higher. This is due to the stigma surrounding black women and cancer in the country.
