Finalists Announced For The 2024 New Generation Awards

Finalists Announced For The 2024 New Generation Awards

The New Generation Social & Digital Media Awards represent the pinnacle of achievement in the digital media industry in South Africa. This year’s 12th edition attracted over 500 submissions, and the announcement of the finalists marks a significant milestone. Modern Marketing is the proud media partner of these prestigious awards.

Stephen Paxton, founder of the awards, remarked on the exceptional quality of this year’s submissions, highlighting the innovative and engaging work displayed by many new agencies and corporates, representing hundreds of South Africa’s best-loved brands.

The analysis of numerous submissions indicates an increasing prevalence of Influencer Marketing, stronger use of Technical Innovation, and more strategic employments of Content Marketing. The pivotal role of virality in numerous campaigns is notable, particularly in the success of low-budget executions. Additionally, a growing number of brands are venturing into the realm of Podcasting, which saw an increased number of submissions.

Paxton expressed gratitude to all the participants for their remarkable campaigns and the 24 esteemed judges for their hard work and valuable insights, during the past three weeks. Special thanks were extended to the Bronze sponsor, Helm – Africa’s CX Innovation Experts, and the official media partner, Modern Marketing.

The 2024 awards gala ceremony will be hosted on Thursday, 26 September at NH Sandton (previously the Hilton Hotel), at 18H00.

The banquet-style awards ceremony is a five-hour event, hosted by actor and voice-over talent Thabiso Bapela and co-host Paxton. Gold, silver, and bronze awards are up for grabs.

‘Throughout the evening, guests will relish a variety of tantalising plated starters, a lavish main course buffet fit for royalty, and decadent plated desserts,’ added Paxton.

Enjoy pre-event networking, and classic dance tunes from DJ MBB, plus live entertainment from singer-songwriter James Deacon, featuring the one and only, Joshua Zacheus AKA JStar on drums, to ensure a lively party vibe! The venue is equipped with a fully licenced bar.

New Gen Awards is a celebration shared between agency and client teams. It’s a time to unite, and unwind after a busy year of intense pitches and campaign executions, and to be recognised for your hard work. The event is powered by Monster Productions (Tech fanatics).

To book your seats and team tables, email: natasha@lavello.co.za. The venue’s capacity is limited to 400 people. Last year’s event sold out in the first two weeks, so please book early to avoid disappointment. Only 28 tables are remaining from the time this article was published. Costs to attend the event can be found here.

Has AI Killed the Timesheet?

Has AI Killed the Timesheet?
Candida Henning, VML South Africa.

Candida Henning, Operations Director at VML South Africa, asks, in a world where generative AI can create a piece of work in seconds, how do agencies that operate on billable hours remain financially sustainable?

Agencies have a long tradition of operating on billable hours. It’s what lies behind the timesheet admin that staff love to hate (there is more hate than love when it comes to this task!) and it’s the way things have always been done. But with generative AI reaching the point where a useable piece of work can be generated in seconds, clients will soon come to expect turnaround times to be adjusted accordingly – which renders the timesheet billing model about as useful as the office fax machine. So, what’s the alternative?

Current State of Play

For those unfamiliar with the current model, here’s a quick catch-up: traditional billing practices in advertising agencies are primarily based on timesheets. This model charges clients for the time that specialists spend on various tasks. The client’s fee is calculated based on the hourly rates of the professionals involved and rates vary depending on the skill set and experience of the team members. If a client retains a specialist, they might pay for 100% of that person’s time or a percentage thereof, depending on the project’s scope. If a specialist is not retained, the client pays based on the number of hours the specialist logged to complete the task. It’s a model that has been the industry standard for many years – and it may finally have reached its sell-by date.

Anything You Can Do, AI Can Do Faster

There are many applications for AI technology in an agency environment. At our agency, we are currently using it in multiple areas. In the strategy area, AI is helping us reduce research time and infuse data into our strategies. On the creative side, we have created our own stock image generating tool.

These AI integrations are already streamlining our workflows and reducing the amount of time – i.e. number of hours – we spend bringing work to life. And where we are now is only the beginning of what is possible with AI. In future, we believe the technology will improve the consistency of our output and our ability to infuse data into everything that we do.

With AI, we can instantly reference past campaign data and learn from the strengths and weaknesses to ensure future campaigns are optimised for success. AI can predict trends and consumer behaviours, enabling proactive planning that aligns with future market demands. By reducing the time spent on data collection and analysis, AI frees up our teams to focus on creative solutions and innovative concepts that will drive results for our clients.

Over time, the integration of AI will likely become more seamless, with tools becoming more user-friendly and accessible to creative teams. This evolution will allow agencies to fully harness AI’s capabilities, enhancing outputs and saving time. So, where does this leave the old faithful hours-based billing model?

Beyond The Timesheet

Recently, some agencies have begun adopting output-based pricing. This approach sets a fixed price for a project based on scoped parameters and deliverables agreed upon upfront, regardless of the time spent.

Another emerging model is performance-based billing. In this scenario, billing is tied to the achievement of specific client KPIs, such as increased sales or improved brand awareness. Over and above a base fee, agencies earn bonuses or percentages when the targets are met.

Bigger Than Any One Agency

The shift towards new revenue models in advertising is not a challenge that can be tackled by individual agencies alone. This is a pivotal point for the industry as a whole and all agencies need to work together and embrace the changes that these improved fee models can bring.

As an industry, we have some introspection to do. Without hours as a metric, we need to consider the real value of our work, rather than the value of the time it takes to produce it. And we need to be prepared to defend that value.

The new output-based pricing model must take into account what the client needs to achieve based on clear KPIs and marketing goals. It must be clear that, while using AI tools improves efficiency, it does not mean a huge reduction in costs, as the value lies in the output and having the expertise to use the tools to achieve that output.

Clients and procurement teams need to understand the benefits of a shift to output-based pricing. If they don’t, agencies will be forced back into a legacy way of working that is no longer serving anyone. In fact, this way of working has benefits for clients. It incentivises agencies to meet KPIs, as their earnings are tied to the success of their work. The model also offers greater predictability for clients, who can budget based on expected outcomes rather than fluctuating hours.

The biggest lesson we can learn though, is that we must never become complacent. The reality is that this conversation has been looming for some time, but as an industry, we have collectively been avoiding eye contact with the skill of a pharmacist faced with Friday afternoon rush hour. Now, AI has made it urgent. It’s tough to reinvent something that has always been done a certain way, but stagnation has never been a good look on anyone.

Commvibe Announces Partnership With Three Top Community Radio Stations

Commvibe Announces Partnership With Three Top Community Radio Stations

With 73% (BRC Rams Amplify, October 2022 – September 2023) of the population tuning into radio weekly from all socio-economic backgrounds, community radio stations play a significant citizenry role in the media landscape. Commvibe is rapidly expanding its representation and empowerment among these sought-after audiences.

Commvibe, powered by Mediamark, has signed exclusive partnerships with three of South Africa’s top community radio stations: Zibonele FM and Bok Radio in the Western Cape and Thetha FM in Gauteng.

‘Community radio stations are critical in providing vital information, education and entertainment to their local communities,’ said Head of Business Development, Mervyn Naidu. ‘As many broadcast in the language of their community, they also foster a strong sense of trust and realness with their audiences, which is what radio is all about,’ continued Naidu.

Zibonele FM, broadcasting in the Khayelitsha area, was SA’s first official community radio station when it received its licence in 1995. Content focuses on health, news, technology, entertainment, youth and local community initiatives. Zibonele FM has won multiple awards, making it one of the most recognised media brands in the community radio landscape. Zibonele is ranked #1 as the most listened to community station in the Western Cape (BRC Rams Amplify, October 2022 – September 2023).

Bok Radio began its broadcast in 2019 to the northern suburbs and surrounds of the Western Cape. It resonates with the culture and rich heritage of its listeners, hosting events and shows to capacity audiences. Regarded as a station ‘punching above its weight’ with a vibrant terrestrial and online footprint. Bok Radio is in the top 5 most listened to community stations in the Western Cape (BRC Rams Amplify, October 2022 – September 2023) .

Thetha FM started broadcasting from a secondary school in Orange Farm, Gauteng in 2003. The station’s mission is to provide informative and empowering content and programming that promotes, among other things, primary healthcare and community upliftment and celebrates diversity that crosses cultural lines. Today, Thetha FM is hailed as one of Gauteng’s most successful community platforms, and the second most popular Community station in Gauteng (BRC Rams Amplify, October 2022 – September 2023).

Mediamark and Commvibe’s exclusive agreements demonstrate their commitment to delivering high-quality media partnerships and solutions. Furthermore, the partnerships will uplift social pride and investment in these communities.

‘Mediating the intersection between advertisers and community radio has been a rewarding journey so far. Our exclusive agreements, led by common purpose, mark a milestone of generosity and inclusiveness, and we are committed to fostering a vibrant community radio landscape for the good of our industry,’ added Wayne Bischoff, CEO.

Simply Black Media Announces First COO

Simply Black Media Announces First COO
Stephanie Thomas, Simply Black Media.

Stephanie Thomas has taken the helm as Simply Black’s new COO. Thomas said her focus will be on enhancing the already robust operations of the agency and driving the consistent adoption of Simply Black’s unique operating culture and ways of working. This is no easy task given the extremely diverse markets the company services across the continent: it has some 250 people in 37 wholly-owned offices in Africa.

‘One can’t say it often enough – Africa isn’t a country. This vast continent’s markets are exceptionally diverse, which is why we have spent the last 10 years investing in home-grown talent in our local offices. Our clients rely on our in-depth knowledge and experience to help them navigate these markets and help them craft campaigns that generate a measurable return on their efforts and investment,’ Thomas explained.

‘My focus is to ensure we remain true to our founding principles of ‘Brilliant at Basics’ and ‘Expert Execution’. However, as we build our business, my role will be to develop the tools and processes to support our teams in accessing our deep experience, specialist knowledge and local market networks, in a unified framework. The goal is to make it easier for clients to get the insights they need – fast, consistently and reliably.’

Data is the new business gold, and that’s particularly true in the African media space, where there is not the same level of hard information available as there is in South Africa or in the developed world. Simply Black is unique in that over the past 15 years it has built up a rich and multilayered data set about the media landscape and consumer behaviour in the various African markets in which it operates. It has also created tools to leverage this data to deliver actionable insights in conceptualising impactful media campaigns.

For example, Simply Black’s planning tool benefits from a wealth of data to ensure that the planning process is highly effective and takes previous campaign performance into account. In addition, its media measuring tool monitors that the planned campaign is actually going out as planned.

‘One of the big challenges when it comes to media campaigns in African markets relates to confirming that the placements are made as planned,’ Thomas said. ‘Thanks to our network, we can do this – it’s just another unique part of our offering to ambitious clients wanting to win on the continent.’

‘Thomas’ decade-long dedication to Simply Black Media equips her with unparalleled experience and insight, making her the ideal choice for COO,’ said Carine Haffejee, CEO.

Haffejee said that Thomas’ appointment is a critical milestone in Simply Black’s growth into Africa’s expert agency of choice. ‘Our experience across Africa’s diverse media markets, and the data we have accumulated, are invaluable in enabling the proper planning and execution of campaigns in these markets,’ she said. ‘But it is people that are the real secret to our business success. Thomas is a perfect example of this. Her strong values, grit and perseverance, as well as her obsession with delighting clients, makes her the obvious choice to take us to the next level. We are super optimistic about the future of the continent and the talent in the markets in which we operate. With Thomas’ lead, we believe we can achieve our goal of creating client experiences that deliver tangible return on investment while creating moments of client delight at every interaction.’

Thomas holds a BA degree in Marketing and Communications from AAA. She is a new mom and has been in the industry for more than 12 years. She has extensively travelled the continent and is passionate about people and her pursuit of allowing them to spend time on things that make their lives easier.

BRC Confirms Comprehensive Update To Its Television And Radio Audience Measurement Programmes

BRC Confirms Comprehensive Update To Its Television And Radio Audience Measurement Programmes

In response to concerns raised by broadcasters regarding the recently released Television Establishment Survey (TV ES) results, the Broadcast Research Council of South Africa (BRC) commissioned an independent review by 3M3A.

The findings revealed that the weighting efficiency of the last TV ES was too low, leading to a recommendation against its adoption into the Television Audience Measurement Survey (TAMS).

‘The media industry in South Africa has long relied on world-class research as the foundation for effective decision-making,’ said Gary Whitaker, CEO of the BRC. ‘As the industry continues to transform, we are dedicated to ensuring our audience measurement systems keep pace, providing stakeholders with the insights they need to thrive.’

‘The TAMS panel has demonstrated good sensitivity to market changes over the years,’ said Whitaker. ‘To build on this, we will be conducting a longitudinal analysis of viewing data from 2019 to 2024, focusing on both unweighted and weighted metrics. This will help us forecast trends and understand the impact of weighting on the results.’

The BRC will also be exploring ways to better align TAMS and the Radio Audience Measurement Survey (RAMS), ensuring consistent population sizing and demographic profiling across the two currencies.

‘Collaboration and transparency are key to the success of our audience measurement initiatives,’ Whitaker added. ‘We will be working closely with broadcasters, advertisers, and other stakeholders to implement a phased approach to updating the television universe, including reweighting the 2023 Establishment Survey and commissioning a new, comprehensive ES that serves both television and radio audiences.’

The release of RAMS Amplify Q1 2024 data was delayed due to concerns raised by the Radio Research Committee (RRC), particularly around the past-7-day (P7D) radio listening figures, which have declined slowly but steadily over the past few years.

‘We take these concerns seriously and have established a technical subcommittee to identify areas for improvement in RAMS Amplify,’ said Whitaker. ‘This subcommittee will work closely with Ipsos to address the queries and provide an action plan to ensure the data can be released with confidence.’

The BRC’s analysis, conducted by 3M3A, found no issues with the sample or weighting in the March 2024 dataset, indicating a gradual decline in overall radio listening. However, the analysis also highlighted some interesting trends, such as the impact of the Youth Booster and the High-Income/Online Booster.

‘We will be monitoring these trends closely and exploring the potential need for more qualitative research to better understand how consumers are engaging with radio,’ Whitaker noted. ‘Our goal is to ensure RAMS Amplify remains a reliable and responsive currency that reflects the evolving listening habits of South Africans.’

Preparing For The Future

As the BRC approaches the conclusion of the RAMS Amplify Ipsos contract in January 2026, the organisation is taking proactive steps to ensure a smooth transition to either a new currency or an enhanced version of the existing one.

‘We cannot afford to rely on a 24-month rolling dataset, which could result in prolonged data release timelines,’ said Whitaker. ‘To avoid the pitfalls we experienced during and after the Covid-19 pandemic, we will be launching a Request for Proposal (RFP) process in 2024 to explore various options and scenarios.’

The BRC is also exploring opportunities for greater collaboration between television and radio broadcasters, with the goal of future-proofing the audience measurement systems and achieving economies of scale.

‘Jointly funded studies, such as the Establishment Survey, and potentially combining budgets for the development of an audio-visual currency that spans both traditional and digital broadcast media, will be key considerations during the RFP process,’ Whitaker explained.

Investing In Industry Education

Recognising the rapidly evolving media landscape and the need for a holistic understanding of audience measurement, the BRC is committed to upskilling the industry through a dedicated education initiative.

‘Our currencies are under scrutiny, as they should be, to ensure they adapt to the new realities we face,’ said Whitaker. ‘The challenge ahead is to provide a comprehensive perspective of the audience, and we are dedicated to equipping the industry with the knowledge and tools to navigate this changing landscape.’

The BRC’s education initiative will include a BRC certification programme covering TAMS, RAMS, the Establishment Survey, Log Verification, Universe Updates, Fusion, and more. Additionally, the organisation will be providing bite-sized, audio-visual educational content to engage and inform the industry.

‘We believe that a clearly defined educational division is a common feature of successful Joint Industry Committees (JICs) around the world,’ Whitaker added. ‘By investing in industry education, we can empower stakeholders to make informed decisions and leverage our audience measurement tools to their fullest potential.’

The Broadcast Research Council of South Africa remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing the media industry in South Africa through collaborative, transparent, and future-focused initiatives.

‘Our global reputation for excellence is built on a deep level of industry collaboration, and we are dedicated to upholding this legacy,’ said Whitaker. ‘By working closely with all stakeholders, we will ensure that our audience measurement systems continue to provide the valid, reliable, and stable data that underpins the success of the South African media industry.’
